BUENOS AIRES, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- Chile plans to open an agricultural office in Vietnam in 2010, as part of its strategy to boost exports of foods and forestry products to Asia, the Vietnam news agency (VNA) reported Wednesday.
According to Chilean Minister of Agriculture Marigen Hornkohl, the South American country has already established four similar offices in China, India, Japan and the Republic of Korea.
At a symposium recently, Hornkohl said that her country regards Asia as an important trade destination.
"Currently, Asia is regarded as an engine to boost the world's economic recovery and escape from the current economic-financial crisis," the news agency cited her as saying.
Chile mainly exports vegetables, fruit, forestry products and wine to Asia and it is pinning a lot of hope on creating a niche for its meat and milk products in this market.
Last year, it earned some US$2.9 billion from its exports of farm and forestry products to Asia, an astonishing surge from some US$1.8 billion in 2006.
Currently, China, Japan and the Republic of Korea remain as the biggest Asian importers of Chilean farm and forestry products.
