The 11th Vinitaly China, a wine fair jointly hosted by Shanghai International Exhibition Co. Ltd., Italian Trade Commission, and a host of Italian companies, is scheduled to take place in Shanghai on Nov. 5 and 6.

In the eyes of international wine makers, China has been holding the most appeal. As wine is increasingly catching on with Chinese consumers, an increasing number of multinational wine brands are swarming into the country.

Latest statistics show that China imported 160,000 kiloliter of wine last year, an increase of 36 percent on a year-on-year basis. During the January-July period this year, the country imported 85,000 kiloliters of wine, up 32.5 percent year on year. China has outpaced Japan to become the biggest wine consumer in Asia.

At the moment, imported and homemade wines are taking 30 percent and 70 percent of the local market, respectively. With Chinese consumers having a good appetite for high-end products, imported wine is expected to rise further.
