The Minister for Economic Development, Michael Aird, has praised seven Tasmanian vineyards on a highly successful joint trade mission to Asia.

The mission was facilitated by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and the Arts and included delegates from, Domaine A, Sugarloaf Ridge, Spring Vale Vineyards, Tamar Ridge Estates, Pirie Tasmania, Stefano Lubiana Wines and Frogmore Creek Wines.

Visiting Frogmore Creek at Cambridge today, Mr Aird congratulated the vineyard on its success in breaking into new lucrative Asian markets and for showcasing fine examples of Tasmanian wines at the Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit exhibition.

“All seven vineyards who attended the exhibition last month, including Frogmore Creek, received a very strong level of interest from potential distributors,” Mr Aird said.

“The delegation had much to be proud of with Tamar Ridge Estates winning the ‘Best Sweet Wine’ of the Hong Kong show and Frogmore Creek recently winning the Tasmanian Export Award in the Agribusiness category.

“Interest from the exhibition has already been converted into exports with Frogmore Creek’s first pallet being dispatched to China earlier this week.

“Tasmanian wine producers are defying national trends and experiencing strong demand from China which is now ranked third behind the United States of America and the United Kingdom as an export destination.

“Exports of Australian wine to Hong Kong are also growing considerably with total sales increasing by 27.4 per cent (approximately $43 million) in the last financial year.”

Mr Aird said many of the trade visitors searched out Tasmanian vineyards as Tasmanian wine was in demand.

“It was evident from the feedback provided to the stand that Tasmania offers a strong and recognisable point of difference to our competitors in both wine quality and the place of origin,” he said.

“For the Tasmanian vineyards whose objective was to gain access to this new market, all received a very strong level of interest from potential distributors.”

Frogmore Creek Director and Viticulturist, Mr Tony Scherer said there was a strong interest In Tasmanian wines and their Riesling FGR.

“We were very happy with interest in our range of wines,” Mr Scherer said.
