Farmersville voters have approved the sale of beer and wine for off-premises consumption.

Voters OK’d the sale of beer and wine by 41 votes. There were 245 votes in favor of the proposition – or about 55 percent – compared to 204votes against – about 45 percent.

Collin County Elections officials said 27 percent of the city’s 1,686 registered residents voted in the Nov. 3 election.
According to information from the elections office, 225 of the city of Farmersville’s registered voters cast early ballots.

Early totals show 139 votes for (62.05 percent) and 85 against (37.95 percent).

The quest to bring the alcohol issue before voters began in July under the direction of the Farmersville Economic Group, an organization formed to get the item on the ballot. The FEC, according to its president Amin Ali, promoted the off-premises sale of beer and wine to boost revenue and tax money for the city.

Earlier this year, the Farmersville City Council set guidelines regarding the sale and distribution of alcohol. By city ordinance, off-premises alcohol sales must be at least 300 feet from a church, public school, public hospital, day care center or private school which has more than 100 students enrolled.
