Australian Wine Certification Scheme
This week Australian wine producers can be acknowledged nationally and internationally for their green credentials after a new certification scheme has been introduced.
The EntWine environmental assurance scheme is run by the Winemaker's Federation of Australia (WFA) and companies must report on their carbon footprint annually, and agree to have their environmental practices checked by independent auditors.
Stephen Strachan of the WFA, said the scheme is a really important initiative that showcases the wine industry's determination tom meet modern expectations about environmental stewardship.
Their aim is to have all exported wine carrying the label by 2014, he added.
The scheme requires high standards of efficiency in the use of water and energy. There are also minimum requirements in the use of chemicals, fertiliser, soil treatments and managements, including waste disposal.
Stephen Strachan said that feedback from the industry has been positive, and 'There is a growing realisation that this is something we have to do if Austrialian wines are to keep meeting consumer and retailer demands.'
There have been stories warning that the wine industry in Australia may be destroyed by climate change, and global warning. There has also been a five year drought in the south east, and water supplies could be threatened.
