The owners of a new store in downtown Zeeland are hoping to add wine to their offerings.

Bob and Shelley Walters recently opened My Favorite Dish & Gifts downtown and asked the City Council last week for support in applying for an take-out liquor license. The couple plans to add wine and possibly beer to their business at 137 E. Main Ave.

Shelley Walters said she wants to provide “well-chosen” wine for customers, which she said will fit in well with the dishes and other tabletop items, spiritual gifts, home and holiday décor, and other items featured at the store.

City Manager Tim Klunder said the city will have to amend the city zoning and alcohol ordinances to allow for wine sales downtown. He said currently the downtown area is zoned for only on-premise alcohol sales. The council plans to review the Walters’ request at a future meeting.

The Walters also will have to receive approval from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission before receiving a license.

Based on population, the city currently has three on-premise and one off-premise liquor licenses available. Since voters lifted the city’s alcohol ban in November 2006, Vitale’s Pizza and AJ’s Grocery & Liquor in Batt’s Plaza on Washington Avenue have received liquor licenses.
