China recognised Cognac designation of origin

On the 18th of December, Cognac became the first foreign designation of geographic origin (g.o.) to be officially recognised by the Chinese authorities. This recognition could pave the way for the recognition of additional European designations of origin.
As long ago as 2005, the Chinese authorities developed a text designed to support and increase the standing of high-quality Chinese products identified with a geographic designation, and which fulfill certain quality criteria.
Once the various phases of the procedure had run their course, the authorities officially announced the recognition, and concomitant protection granted to the term and designation of originCognac on the 18th of December. "That Cognac has become the first European geographical designation to be recognised in China is proof of the importance of our geographical designation internationally", says Alain Philippe, Director of the Cognac association.
