Rare Shanghai paintings
Shanghai Art Museum is displaying part of its collection of paintings by the artists of the Shanghai Painting School, a major painting movement in modern China, with the wide range of works covering more than 150 years of art history.
Emerging in the mid-19th century, the school refers to a large number of painters who lived in Shanghai. The painters were among the first generation of Chinese artists deeply infl uenced by Western painting style. Their infl uence continues to exist today.
The exhibition, due to be held through January 24, showcases 88 pieces by painters including acclaimed artists Wu Changshuo, Zhao Zhiqian, and Xu Gu.
Among the exhibited works, many have rarely been publicly exhibited before, such as Ren Bonian's Plum Blossom and Sparrow and Hills in Autumn by Wu Hufan.
