Wine masters Peter and Philippa Carr to pass on their tasting tips
ONE is Asda’s chief wine buyer, the other was a director of the company that brought Jacob’s Creek to England – and next week they will be treating York people to a charity wine and food matching evening.
Husband and wife team Peter and Philippa Carr are one of only two married couples in the world to have both earned the title of Master of Wine.
On Thursday, they will be sharing their expertise with York residents to help raise funds for the Lord Mayor of York’s charities.
Only 50 tickets are available for the event at York’s historic Mansion House, which is being supported by the local delicatessen Field And Fawcett.
Peter, who lives off Lord Mayor’s Walk, in York, with Philippa and their two daughters, said: “Learning about wine should be fun and in this instance we will be showing how certain foods match different wines.”
As chief wine buyer for Asda, Philippa, 37, sources wines for the supermarket’s range and writes the labels that appear on the bottles.
Last year, she starred on Japanese TV during a visit to the country to promote Asda’s Extra Special wines. The show is described as the Japanese version of Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.
Peter, 58, who met Philippa over a bottle of green cognac at a wine merchant’s in Thorp Arch, is a former director of Caxton Tower Wines – the importer of Jacob’s Creek.
The couple are among only 279 people in the world to have passed the Master of Wine examination – which tests both practical and theoretical understanding of the art, science and business of wine.
Tickets for the evening cost £25, including wine and small eats, and all proceeds will go to the Lord Mayor of York’s charities.
This year, these are York Against Cancer and Brunswick Organic Nursery and Craft Workshop, in Bishopthorpe, a workplace for adults with learning disabilities.
