Burgundy wine exports fell 23% in volume and 29% value in the first nine months of 2009,  according to regional wine trade body BIVB.

Nearly 54m bottles were exported between January and September 2009, worth more than EUR341.21m.

Hit by the economic slowdown and the weakness of sterling against the euro, shipments to the UK, Burgundy's biggest export market, were down 35% in volume to 12.75m bottles and 34% in value to EUR68.4m.

Shipments to the US, Burgundy's second biggest export market, fell 33% in volume and 44% in  value.

Volumes to eurozone countries Belgium and Germany rose on last year.

However, exports to the EU as a whole fell 21% in volume and 24.5% in value.
