Captain Morgan Parrot Bay Coconut Rum, 90 proof, Caribbean, $20 750 ml

With the cold weather bearing down upon us, you might be dreaming of tropical escapes. If you cannot skip town, grab a bottle of this Caribbean treat and just pretend. After your first sip, you will be hooked. But this rum has a higher alcohol content than most flavored rums, so enjoy in moderation. Aromas of coconut milk and warm spice lead into soft and creamy coconut flavors that linger perfectly, with a nice tropical feel and a subtle note of vanilla to round out the taste. Perfect on the rocks with a wedge of pineapple or mixed with your favorite juices, especially fresh squeezed orange juice with a pineapple garnish.

Flying Dog Brewery Road Dog Porter, Colorado, 6 percent alcohol, $8 per 6-pack

This is one of my favorite breweries. This porter has a nice medium-brown color and delivers loads of aromas. Notes of cocoa, roasted malt and tobacco develop into smoky flavors and caramel notes with a nice touch of earthiness. The finish keeps the roasted flavors in check with a touch of bitterness. This beer would be terrific with beef stew or rib-eye steak, or just enjoy it by the fire with nuts or chocolate.

2008 Kendall-Jackson Grand Reserve Pinot Gris, California, $20

Kendall-Jackson's Grand Reserve line of wines tends to have more depth and character than the Vintners Reserve line, and the price difference is only about $10. Grand Reserve wines make a great splurge. In this pinot gris, aromas of lemon curd and custard fill the glass and develop into the same flavors but with the addition of crispness and acidity. Flavors of fresh citrus and green grass complement the creaminess to make for a well -balanced wine. A perfect match for Greek chicken or a pork dish with a light mushroom sauce.
