Big Band Live at Asara

The Big Band of the German Armed Forces ('Bundeswehr') will be staging a concert in aid of the Red Cross Memorial Children's Hospital on March 3, on the magnificent lawns of the Asara Wine Estate and Hotel complex in Stellenbosch.
 
 
The event offers ideal family entertainment for Stellenbosch fans and the surrounding winelands communities, and offering the use of its venue is Asara's corporate charitable donation in kind to this deserving good cause.

This concert forms part of the Good Hope IV, a cultural support programme between the South African and German armed forces. Patron and master of the concert tour are former Miss South Africa, Wilma van der Bijl and the German Ambassador, Dieter W Haller.

Under the baton of band leader Lt Col Christoph Lieder the programme offers entertainment for the whole family, catering to the tastes of young and old, with items on a musical from Glenn Miller to Robbie Williams. Bwalya from Zambia, is solo vocalist.

Light finger snacks, soft drinks and Asara fine wines will be on sale before the show and during interval. For patrons who wish to make a night out of the occasion, there is an a la carte dinner available before the show at one of Asara's two restaurants - Raphael's and Bistro & Tapas@Asara.

One of the most successful European entertainment orchestras, the Big Band of the Bundeswehr is based near Cologne, and has raised more than 11 million euros for charitable causes in its 39 years of existence - at benefit concerts, open-air events, television appearances, galas, press or sports balls in Germany or overseas.

The show orchestra regularly participates in diplomatic missions abroad, from Moscow to New York, Lisbon to Oslo.

In 2009 alone, more than 150,000 concertgoers enjoyed the interplay of artistic, technical and musical creativity in their performances - a selection of swing, current hits and 'evergreens', not to be confused with German 'brass' music.

It goes on tour in Germany 70 times this year, as well as performing in Berlin at the grand summer gala event of the German Federal President, Horst Köhler.
