Off-Premise Wine Sales Increase 6 Percent in December
Off-premise wine sales data for the second half of the crucial holiday sales season--including Christmas and New Years—increased 6.3 percent from the same period last year in the four weeks ending January 9 according to The Nielsen Company-tracked data. In the 13 weeks ending January 9, which includes the entire holiday sales period, sales were up 2.2 percent.
Most of the growth that took place was in sales of domestic wines. Year-on-year, domestic wine sales grew 7.5 percent while imports grew 3.4 percent in the 4 weeks ending January 9. Domestic sales increased 4.6 percent while imported wine declined 1 percent in the 52 weeks ending January 9.
Total wine sales grew in most price points. The largest growth took place in the $3 to $5.99 and $9 to $11.99 price segments. Year-on-year, wines retailing for $3 to $5.99 grew 10.4 percent in the 4 weeks ending January 9 while wines in the $9 to $11.99 price segment grew 9.9 percent in the same period. Sales in the over $20 price point, which were declining earlier in the year, grew 9.4 percent in the 4 weeks ending January 9.
