Commission approves wine lab

The St. Helena Planning Commission approved a use permit Tuesday for Napa Valley Think Tank, a new wine lab at 1432 Main St., the former site of Morrison Funeral Chapel and Crush.

The applicants say the business will include a commercial wine laboratory, a winemaking supply store and consulting services.

Commissioners’ primary concerns were with safety. Commissioner Alan Galbraith said that, judging from the applicants’ plans, the lab won’t meet safety standards.

The applicants said they will work with Napa County Environmental Management, which regulates similar labs around the county. According to the conditions of the use permit, the agency will have to assure the city that the lab is safe before the business opens.
