Two new vintages from boutique Central Otago vineyard Locharburn
Young boutique Central Otago vineyard Locharburn is releasing two new vintages this month. Locharburn Central Otago Pinot Noir 2008 and Locharburn Central Otago Pinot Rosé 2009 are available for sale now throughout New Zealand.
For owners Chris and Jenny Hill, their vineyard is the culmination of a long-held dream. The couple now live and work on the land they bought in 2004, settling into their new home after a lifetime building a successful business in New Plymouth. Chris manages the vineyard while Jenny drives the sales and marketing.
Named for the Locharburn stream which the vines and their home overlook, their 14ha sustainably accredited vineyard is planted on north-easterly facing terraces near the top of Lake Dunstan in Cromwell Basin, with stunning views to the surrounding alpine ranges. The unique microclimate of the terraces, Central Otago’s famed hot summers and long autumns let their grapes ripen slowly, yielding high-quality fruit with intense, complex flavours.
The first Locharburn wines received a low-key release over the last few years with sales through their own efforts in the South Island, while the North Island sales are managed by their capable distributor, Co Pilot.
“While the wines will always be produced in limited quantities, their quality is such that we’d like to take it to the wider public,” says Jenny.
With hands-on owners working the vineyard and award-winning winemaker Carol Bunn taking care of the winemaking, these wines showcase the distinctive qualities of lovingly grown and crafted Central Otago wine.
Locharburn Central Otago Pinot Noir 2008 presents a scented bouquet of berries, spices and herbs that heralds richly flavoured sweet red cherry and raspberry flavours with hints of wild thyme, herbs and subtle French oak. It is vibrant and supple with a silky finish. $34.95 RRP.
Locharburn Central Otago Pinot Rose 2009 is a harmonious wine with enticing strawberry and spice aromas. Full-bodied, vibrantly fruity and smooth, with a slightly creamy texture. $22.95 RRP
The wines will be available through selected fine wine outlets and restaurants throughout New Zealand.
“We live in a beautiful place, doing the things we love. The fact that we can share it with others through our wine makes us appreciate everything even more,” says Jenny.
