Orange vineyards seek new regional name
A number of vineyards around Orange in Central West NSW are pushing for a distinctive label to help market their wine.
Currently, only wine made with grapes grown above 600 metres can use the Orange geographical indicator.
Vineyards below that high altitude mark have to label their wine as Central Ranges.
The president of the NSW Wine Industry Association, David Lowe, says vignerons will meet with representatives from the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation today to put forward alternative names.
"This has been enacted in legislation. It's a complete protection mechanism," he says.
"It means that if you make a claim on a bottle of wine that it comes from a certain region, you have to have data and evidence that the grapes were actually grown in that region."
