A Pabst Blue Ribbon will cost you $44 in China
And you thought $6 for a 12-pack was too expensive. You’d have to spend a good portion of your paycheck to get drunk off of PBR if you lived in China.
Kinda crazy to think that a beer like this can go for such a steep price. Don’t get me wrong, I used to drink the stuff all of the time, but I don’t think I’d spend more than $4 for a PBR. And that price is still a real stretch.
In America it’s called PBR and is the blue-collar/hipster beverage of choice. In China it’s called Pabst Blue Ribbon 1844 and will run you $44 a bottle.
That’s the difference between American and Chinese beer advertising: In China they want it their beer to be regal, and in America, we want to know that it’s a f***ing winner. Can the Chinese really appreciate PBR if they don’t know how many blue ribbons it’s won?
The advertising campaign for the beer even likens it to “Scotch whisky, French brandy, Bordeaux wine,” as they are all matured in wooden casks.
Sure, it’s just like all of those things, if say, you were just released from prison and only been privy to the refreshment of toilet wine for the past 3-6 years. OK, maybe that’s an overstatement. I actually really enjoy the beer, but I can’t fathom what kind of French Brandy tastes like a Pabst.
And what do the Chinese Hipsters drink? Is it some sort of backwards, unironic crowd that drinks PBR? Guys in shirts with current bands that wear regular fitting jeans and aviator sunglasses? Do they stand around and scoff at the kids drinking High Life? Chinese culture is starting to baffle me.
