Marlborough Pinot Noir from Whitehaven Wine Company has outstripped the field traditionally dominated by Central Otago to get a 5 star ranking and be named as ‘Best Buy’ by Cuisine magazine.
The 2008 Whitehaven Pinot Noir was singled out from a field of 242 Pinot Noirs by Cuisine’s expert panel, led by wine judge John Belsham.
Just eleven labels from the wide field were deemed worthy of the five-star rating by the prestigious food and wine publication.
Whitehaven’s Pinot Noir was selected as one of the Top Ten Pinot Noirs and also identified as the best value for price across the entire field.
Whitehaven managing director Sue White says Cuisine’s selections carry great weight with wine drinkers so to be picked out from the large range is great recognition, not only for Whitehaven but for the potential of Marlborough Pinot Noir.
“The regional differences in New Zealand’s Pinot Noir are emerging and we’re pleased to be amongst the wineries showing how Marlborough can produce outstanding Pinot,” she said.
Overseas critics are noting the enormous potential of New Zealand pinots, with A文章来源中国酒业新闻网ustralian critic Nick Stock suggesting at the Pinot Noir 2010 earlier this year that Sauvignon Blanc may be just the curtain-raiser, with Pinot Noir the main act ahead for the New Zealand wine industry.
Whitehaven winemaker Sam Smail says his Pinot Noir has the traditional dark cherry and plum fruit flavours, underlined with spicy oak and attractive savoury tones. The wine has a fine silky texture with a long, firm finish.
It would be ideal partnered with duck or venison, he said.
One United States reviewer describes it as a wine of fabulous structure which really comes alive on the palate.
The Whitehaven Pinot Noir 2008 has already collected medals at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards, the NZ International Wine Show and the International Wine Challenge UK.
