Shoppers cleared shelves of bargain bubbly within two hours of it going on sale yesterday as a supermarket price war exploded over Christmas fizz.

Marks & Spencer slashed its £30 Louis Chaurey Brut Champagne to a tenner, sparking a stampede as shoppers queued to claim their ration of two bottles each.

Tesco immediately asked suppliers to find 300,000 bottles to sell for £10, while Morrisons announced it would offer Bollinger for £18 - less than half price - next week.

Asda knocked £7 off Heidsieck while Sainsbury's took £10 off the Queens' favourite, Taittinger. Morrisons and Tesco both slashed the price of other top-name bubblies.

Fiona Barrett, 55, picked up her M&S ration at Alderley Edge in Cheshire and sent her husband and son out for four more. She said: "It's cheap and we all need cheering up."
