The Italian wine sales are going up

The Italian wine, with its 45 million of hectoliters per year, represents the 17% of the Industrial production and the 28% of the EU one. The wine generates a turnover of 13.5 billion euro, plus 2 billion from the satellite industries, and employs over 1 million people, the 50% more than 10 years ago. A big number of them are immigrants.

Besides Italy is the home country of Bacchus, the wine consumption is decreasing there: 45 liters per year per person in 2007, 43 in 2009 and probably less than 40 in the near future. In the ‘70s the consumption was around 120 liters per year per person. A drop is also recorded in the world consumptions, -2.9% in 2009. These are the data presented at the Montepaschi Wine Forum.

Just a few months after the work on the Italian enologic productions, the Area Research completed a year-long work, the development of a competitively index for the Italian wine productions: the Mps Wine Index. The Index is calculated as the weighted average price from almost 100 high quality wines produced in selected regions (VQPRD) and table wines. After the strong drop of 2009 (-18.8%), the first 8 months of 2010 showed a stabilization at the December 2009 levels.

The study presented by the Area Research showed also “Osservatorio Mps”, a survey on the sale points of the Montepaschi group. Among the most interesting observations is the widespread optimism for the next year sales. The 70% circa of the stakeholders forecast a sale increase for the 2011: most of them less than a 5% but some of them (the 15.1%) forecast a more than 10% increase. The supposed grow should derive from an increase in the sale volume, since most of the stakeholder forecast stable prices for the 2011. The 30% of the people hypothesize a modest increment, though. Also the export forecasts show some news. Almost the 95% of the view expect an export increase: the majority (53%) forecasts a 5% increase, but the 22% expects a more than 10% grow. China, Northern Europe and Swiss are the country of this supposed increment.

The wine is still an important budget item of the Italian export: it is estimated in 3.5 billion euro, the 45% of the entire wine sector budget.

The 2010 started bringing good news: from January to July there was an export increase of the 4% in volume and the 6.9% in value. The unitary value is now under 1.78 euro per liter; this value is obviously influenced by the exchange rates, since the main importer of the Italian wines is USA.

The export is growing mainly because the strong demand from extra-European countries, such as China which doubled its import of Italian wines. Moreover, Asia could be a pivotal market for the future, since between 2009 and 2013 the wine consumption is expected to grow of the 25%.
