The alcohol industry’s greenest individuals and companies came together in central London this week for the results of the 2011 drinks business Green Awards.

Chilean winemaking legend Miguel Torres was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award as a result of his commitment to tackling environmental issues across his many estates and the pioneering initiatives he has been involved with in the South American country.

Vanya Cullen of Cullen Wines received the Green Personality of the Year prize.

Family-run Australian winery De Bortoli picked up the Sustainability Award, with chief winemaker Steve Webber saying: “Winning this award helps us to highlight the movements De Bortoli is making towards becoming a sustainable company – at De Bortoli we are always striving for better.”

The Logistics and Supply Chain Green initiative Award went to DGB, which aims to minimise its footprint across all areas of its operations with a focus on becoming an environmental leader in the South African wine industry.

It scooped the prize for its introduction of new lighter-weight bottles across the globe, which helped reduce its carbon emissions by 30%.

Durbanville Hills won the Ethical Award of the Year, while Viñedos Emiliana won the Best Green Launch of the Year for Eco Balance.

It was a good night for the Chilean wine industry, with Cono Sur Vineyards also walking off with the Green Company of the Year Award.

Michael Cox, Wines of Chile’s director – Europe, said: “Nature has blessed Chile with a natural ‘greenness’. I commend Chile’s winemakers for creating a meaningfully sustainable legacy for its future generations.”
