Industry founder — Opened by Adelsheim family in 1971, winery size and production increased

One of the Willamette Valley’s first wineries will celebrate its 40th year with a series of events over the next several months.

Adelsheim Vineyard was established four decades ago, after David and Ginny Adelsheim purchased the property that now holds Quarter Mile Lane Vineyard on June 1, 1971. They began planting vines on the property, home to their original vineyard and winery, the following year.

The company has grown to include 11 vineyard sites throughout the area, a total of 235 acres, and a winery that can produce up to 40,000 cases of wine a year. The winery and vineyards bear L.I.V.E. (Low-input Viticulture and Enology) certification and many of the company’s wines carry the Oregon Certified Sustainable Wine (OCSW) logo.

Adelsheim Vineyards will kick off celebration of its 40th anniversary May 15, when David Adelsheim will lead a tasting of a selection of wines from each of Adelsheim’s four decades of winemaking.

The anniversary events will culminate in an Aug. 13 gala catered by Chef Vitaly Paley of Paley’s Place in Portland.

“I am very honored to be part of the 40th anniversary gala event,” Paley said in a press release. “It is so inspiring to me that David Adelsheim had this vision 40 years ago and now, years later, he tirelessly is still at it and consistently able to blow people away with his wines.”

Although many of the celebratory events will be open to the public, members of Adelsheim’s Quarter Mile Society will also be invited to an exclusive event July 10 at the original vineyard and winery site on Quarter Mile Lane. The event will feature a variety of library and current release wines and David Adelsheim will, with viticulturist and vineyard manager Chad Vargas, lead a walk through the company’s oldest vineyard blocks.
