Support for state stores from union head
At a Pennsylvania Press Club appearance Monday, Wendell W. Young, president of Local 1776 of the United Food and Commercial Workers, listed several reasons why Pennsylvania should stick with its state store system for liquor sales, the Delaware County Daily Times reports in an Associated Press story.
Summing up Young's views, the report said Young held that "state-owned liquor and wine stores do a better job collecting taxes, enforcing the drinking age and offering a broad selection of products at competitive prices than private operators would."
Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett and legislators are considering a switch to a system of privately run stores that would buy licenses from the state, providing an estimated $2 billion in revenue for Pennsylvania.
