Jeff Clarke new chief winemaker at Ara Wines
Internationally renowned winemaker Jeff Clarke has been appointed as chief winemaker at Marlborough’s premier single-vineyard producer, Ara Wines.
Recognised as “International White Winemaker of the Year” at the London International Wine Challenge some years ago, and nominated by Tim Atkin, a leading UK wine journalist, as one of his six top winemakers globally, Jeff joins the Ara Wines team today, 7 March 2011.
After starting his winemaker career in Australia, Jeff honed his craft at Montana Wines in New Zealand for 17 years. He has had a significant role in the continued development of the now world famous Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc wine style. Jeff also helped drive the development of New Zealand Pinot Noir and Sparkling, and more recently, the increasingly popular Pinot Gris variety.
Along with the Marlborough Research Institute, Jeff was one of the pioneers of the understanding of Marlborough terroir and the three sub-appellations of Northern Wairau, Southern Valleys and Awatere.
Ara’s single-estate Marlborough wines are gaining increasing profile in a number of international markets. In his new role, Jeff will use his extensive experience in building premium wine brands to bring the best out of Ara’s unique Southern Valleys terroir.
“I’m excited by the opportunity to both work with the enthusiastic and talented team at Ara, and to create Marlborough’s leading single estate wines,” says Jeff.
His sentiments are shared by Christine Pears, Chief Executive of Ara. “After focusing primarily on the vineyard for the first few years, it is a logical step for us to make sure we have the best winemaking expertise on board. There are few, if any, winemakers in New Zealand with Jeff’s outstanding track record and wealth of experience.”
Sadly, Jeff’s appointment coincides with the departure of one of the leading figures at Ara during the years of its establishment. Having established the vineyard and overseen winemaking operations to date, Dr Damian Martin will be leaving.
“Damian has made a considerable contribution to the establishment of Ara and we wish him all the best for the future,” says Christine.
Gus Struthers, who joined Ara in 2010 from Constellation to lead Ara’s vineyard operations, will now assume full responsibility for the viticultural management of the vineyard. He brings significant experience to the role and will lead Ara’s established and dedicated viticultural and operations teams.
