Chile’s commitment to protecting its natural environment and providing a sustainable future has long been at the heart of winery ideology. Blessed with a natural geography that allows wineries of all shapes and sizes to adopt a green approach, Chile has been a pioneer of the environmentally aware and organic movements for decades.

The consistent efforts by Chile’s wineries were highlighted last night at the 2011 Drinks Business Green Awards where Chilean wineries scooped two awards, including the top prize of Green Company of the Year:

Cono Sur - Green Company of the Year
Emiliana Organic Vineyards – Best Green Launch for ‘Eco Balance’

The generic body, Wines of Chile, which works on behalf of Chile’s wineries, has been a keen supporter of the Drinks Business Green Awards since their inception. They are proud to once again sponsor the ‘Green Retailer of the Year’ award which this year went to:

Sainsbury’s – Green Retailer of the Year

Wines of Chile’s Director - Europe, Michael Cox, was on hand last night to present the award to Sainsbury’s. He said of the Drinks Business Green Awards, “Nature has blessed Chile with a natural ‘greenness’. I commend Chile’s winemakers for creating a meaningfully sustainable legacy for its future generations”.

Another award winner with strong ties to Chile was Miguel Torres who was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for his commitment to the environment across his different estates and the pioneering initiatives in Chile.
