Law prevents liquor sales on election day

With the special primary election rapidly approaching, did you know there's a law that prevents you from buying hard liquor that day?

Since West Virginia became a state, it's been illegal to buy hard liquor on the election day, and that's no different for the upcoming special primary on May 14th.

Monongalia County Clerk Carye Blaney says the law likely came into effect because candidates were buying votes with liquor.

The law has been repealed, but won't go into effect until June 10th.

Blaney adds that one reason for the repeal could be lost revenue.

"During that last special August election, it was estimated that it cost the liquor retailers over a million dollars in sales for just that Saturday special election," says Blaney.

Even though you can't buy liquor from a retailer, you can still buy beer and wine.  However, you can buy liquor if you're at a restaurant or bar.
