Real deal Hong Kong urban Chinese food comes to our region
Plenty of restaurants claim to offer “authentic” cuisine and will typically over promise on their concept. cb5 Restaurant Group, a leading developer of captivating restaurant and nightlife concepts throughout the country, is not only delivering on their promise, they are making no excuses for their approach to America’s beloved, and widely misinterpreted Chinese cuisine.
cb5’s newest venture, six years in the making, China White, is a sleek, modern and sophisticated restaurant that prepares real Chinese food that pulls no punches. Think ‘dumpling noodle house’ meets ‘Chinatown street vendor’, prepared by Hong Kong cooks. Bring to that service, style, and an eco-friendly approach and China White becomes a place where Chinese cuisine becomes an unbastardized version of its bright, fresh and flavorful self.
China White will have two locations - one in Purchase, NY at 578 Anderson Hill Road and the other one in the other one in Greenwich, CT at 249 Railroad Ave.
Communal tables and counter seating add to the energy of the room and the menu’s focus on authentic recipes and preparations make up the underlining culture of the China White experience. Natural chicken, local raised pork, grass fed beef, organic silken tofu, wild caught fish and seafood, cage-free chicken eggs, organic duck, and organic vegetables make up the menu which include dim sum and dumplings as seen with; vegetable spring rolls with chile five spice dipping sauce; laughing shrimp made with rice wine, ginger, garlic, and chile pepper, in crisp lettuce cups; steamed or fried dumplings filled with edamame and shrimp, ginger pork, Szechuan beef, scallion chicken, or crispy vegetables; and organic wheat bao bao buns stuffed with Chinatown roast pork or BBQ beef.
Gluten and wheat free noodle dishes include; rice vermicelli with golden curry and crushed peanuts; glass noodles with wild mushrooms; and chow fun with five spice chili basil, all of which can be prepared with choice of vegetable, tofu, beef, pork, chicken or shrimp. More noodle varieties include; organic wheat lo mein with sesame ginger sauce; Hong Kong with Chinese black bean sauce; and buckwheat served cool with peanut sauce and cucumber. Organic white, brown or red Bhutanese rice dishes and soups such as velvet coconut corn egg drop, hot and sour, and won ton “everything” round out the offerings.
Specialties are a hearty, bold selection of traditional Chinese favorites. Crispy whole fish with ginger chile sauce, wok seared prawns with spinach and black bean sauce, Chinatown roast chicken, and crispy Peking duck with black vinegar sauce, to name a few.
In keeping with an American Chinese tradition, China White will do a strong take-out business, while re-inventing the manner by which it is executed. A late night schedule will allow hungry revelers, post show patrons, and tired commuters a place to enjoy quality food while the rest of the neighborhood is calling it a night. Asian beer selections, sake, and house made soda drinks comprise the bulk of the bar selections, continuing with the more authentic, organic approach to food, and even beverage.
China White is produced by cb5 Restaurant Group, led by Greenwich, CT resident Jody Pennette. cb5 owns the popular Lolita (Greenwich) and Red Lulu (South Norwalk) Mexican Cocina and Tequila Bars, and most recently developed the highly regarded Gabriele’s Italian Steakhouse in Greenwich. The China White concept will be opening in Greenwich, CT and Purchase, NY within a few weeks of one another in May of 2011.
“We got so carried away with the concept, and excited with the talent that has been brought in, we felt confident enough that we decided to go for it!” said Pennette.
