Brother Timothy Celebration Dinner Benefits Lasallian Education Fund

Two icons of the wine industry will be honored by the Lasallian Education Fund next month. The fund will honor Donald Hess with the Brother Timothy Award for Charitable Works while Richard Maher will receive the Brother Timothy Award for Service Leadership.

The awards will be presented during the May 14 Brother Timothy Celebration Dinner at the Culinary Institute at Greystone, a benefit for the Lasallian Education Fund.

When Donald Hess came to Napa Valley looking for a special and unique spot, he found it on Mt. Veeder at the home of the Christian Brothers Winery. He established a long-term partnership with the Christian Brothers that continues.

Dick Maher served as president of the Christian Brothers Winery from 1986 to 1992, providing service to the Christian Brothers in running the winery, later remaining a friend, a founding board member, and chairman with the Lasallian Education Fund.

His association with the Christian Brothers goes back to 1975 when the first of his five children attended Justin Sienna High School. He now consults with Maher & Associates and is chairman of Momokawi Sake. Maher is also chairman of the board at Rianda House and is active with Hospice.

“Honoring the two together is a nice thing to be doing for two individuals who have had a great history with the Christian Brothers,” Lasallian Education Fund president Michael Mulcahy said.

Margrit Biever Mondavi and Margaret Duckhorn will co-chair the Lasallian Education Fund’s Brother Timothy Celebration Dinner. The dinner is an annual event raising scholarship funding for 10 Lasallian Schools on the West Coast.

Brother Timothy (1919-2004) served for over 50 years as Master Winemaker for the Christian Brothers Winery, was a mentor in Napa Valley and founded the Lasallian Education Fund to provide scholarships for underserved children.

Donald Hess donates about 300 cases of Brother Timothy Mont La Salle Vineyard Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, a special wine, each year to raise funds for the Lasallian Education Fund.

Aaron Taylor, former recipient of the Lombardi Trophy, Super Bowl Champion, current CBS sportscaster, and a Lasallian school alum, will emcee the event.

The guest chef will be Richard Reddington of REDD. Vintners representing 30 esteemed wineries will host each sponsor table.

The Lasallian Education fund was set up to break the cycle of poverty through education and provides funding for poverty level kids to attend Lasallian, or Christian Brothers, schools. Twenty percent of children aged 12-17 live in poverty.
