Cakebread Cellars: 50+ chefs return to Napa green winery

Cakebread Cellars, a long-time Napa green winery, hosts its 25th annual American Harvest Workshop celebration August 18-20, 2011. The centerpiece of the weekend is the Grand Chefs’ Tasting on August 19, which is open to the public. At this walk-around tasting, featuring dishes by 24 chefs, attendees will have the chance to explore the entire winery, eating and sipping along the way.

Typically at this Cakebread event, five chefs from around the world participate in five days of learning, tasting, cooking, grape-picking and more.

But this year, to mark its 25th year, winery owners Jack and Dolores Cakebread invited every chef who had attended in the past to return to their Rutherford winery. An astounding 51 chefs accepted the offer, including culinary luminaries from across the country and around the world such as: Rick Moonen (RM Seafood, Las Vegas), Kevin Taylor (Restaurant Kevin Taylor, Denver), Pascal Oudin (Pascal’s on Ponce, Coral Gables), Ken Frank (La Toque, Napa), Scott Gottlich (Bijoux, Dallas) and Sujan Murkherjee (Taj Bengal, West Bengal, India).

“We are thrilled—and humbled—by the response to the invitations,” says Cakebread Culinary Director Brian Streeter. “We’ll have chefs here who attended the very first workshop in 1986, all the way through chefs who attended last year’s. They hail from dozens of states and three continents. ” Food and cooking—and how they relate to wine—have been integral to Cakebread’s mission since the winery opened in 1973, Streeter notes. He says their longtime culinary focus sets Cakebread apart from other major wineries in the region, and that Dolores Cakebread herself leads the way with her organic vegetable and herb garden at the front of the winery.

Cakebread is certified by the Napa Green Winery and Napa Green Land programs.
