Sparkling autumn days boost wine stocks

The wine industry has welcomed last week's fine, sunny weather saying it has come just at the right time.

Coal River Valley winemaker Tony Sherer says a challenging summer with wet and cold conditions, disease issues and harvest delays has resulted in lower yields.

But he told ABC Radio's Country Hour the warmer late autumn has produced good quality fruit, especially for sparkling wines.

"That's one of the foundations of the Tasmanian industry is sparkling wine and we're very happy with the quality we've got here, both with the pinot noir and the chardonnay," he said.

"If the weather stayed the way it was, and we didn't get that really nice week of warm weather, it could have been a different story I think, but we've had great vintages really from 2005 on.

"The last vintage like this was 2004 so we've got really nothing to complain about."
