China battles drunk drivers
BEIJING, May 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Traffic police nationwide have all stepped up their efforts to crack down on drunk driving, CCTV reporter Paul Crowe takes a look at their moves in major cities.
The early hours of the morning in Xingtai city in Northern China's Hebei province. A drunk driver is caught by traffic police.
Driver Liu's mind is wandering, he can hardly speak a word. Police take him to a hospital for blood testing. Liu suddenly bites the police to try to escape giving a blood sample.
The test results showed excessive alcohol in Liu's blood, about 20 milliliters higher than the legal limit, his trial is pending.
Just after midnight in Huai'an city in Eastern Jiangsu province, traffic police have noticed a suspicious black Santana. Realizing he's been spotted the driver promptly got out of the car and dashed to a construction site nearby.
He was finally caught and an alcohol test showed about ten milliliters of alcohol above the legal limit.
"It's useless to regret, I've done the wrong thing, I wouldn't do that again."
12.30 am in Nanjing city, a blue car is stopped. The thick smell of alcohol on the driver's breath catches the attention of police.
"It's too high, 118mg per 100ml."
"How much have you drunk?"
"Not much.”
"What did you drink?"
"Just beer. Two bottles."
Test results show that the driver's blood-alcohol has exceeded the drink driving level, his license will be revoked, and he will face up to six months in prison.
