Compound in red wine given to boxers to study concussions
Texas researchers are trying to find out whether a compound found in red wine could protect against damaging effects of concussions.
If so, this could have implications, not only for athletes but for anyone injured in a fall or car accident.
James Grant is one of five professional boxers participating in the study which looks at Resveratrol, a compound found in red wine and grape juice, as a way to treat athletes with concussions.
Researchers are using an oral supplement for the study, hoping the benefits of the pill will play a major role in the future of contact sports.
"I'm 32, as I get older I don't want to be slurring, talking bad, so I feel like this study will help me rehabilitate my brain try help me focus a little bit more," said Grant. "So when later on comes, I won't be stuttering too much and showing that I've been boxing for 20 years."
Pro boxers take a supplement form of Resveratrol within two hours after suffering a concussion during a match. Researchers then compare past and present neuro-cognitive tests and MRI scans. They hope to have results by December.
