Chinese tourists and wine drinkers to top the charts – How to get into the action

At the China Australia Tourism Summit held in Cairns in June, some vital information was revealed about Chinese tourism and how tourism operators can share in the riches.

Chin Communications was interpreting for the event and we learnt that Chinese tourists are the number one spenders in Australia and by 2020 they will spend $6 billion in visits to Australia. One of the key messages out of the conference for me was that you have to present your attraction in Chinese Language to have a chance of sharing in those dollars. About 70% of Chinese decide on their travel on the internet – and, guess what, it needs to be in Chinese or they won’t find you. Once they arrive, details of your offering also must be in good Chinese, or they won’t value the experience.

Tourism Minister Martin Ferguson said that the Government is planning to address what Chinese tourists want and a big focus will be on improving language and cultural understanding – abilities that are currently lacking.
