"Daughter Wine" in Southern China

By   2011-7-12 18:01:03

It's said that the southerners in China often begin brewing wine when their daughters are at an early age and would bury the wine under a pond until the time their daughters get married. The wine is then used for feasting the guests in the wedding. Afterwards, the wine was gradually developed in Shaoxing into the famous Huadiao Wine (high-grade Shaoxing wine). The wine jars are uniquely carved with a variety of floral patterns, figures, birds, beasts or landscapes when they were only semi-finished. When at the time of wedding, they will be taken out of the pond and painted with "Hundred Performances" in oil paint, such as the pictures of "Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea" and "The Dragon and Phoenix Bringing Auspices and Prosperity" together with the auspicious verses of "Everything Goes Well", "A Joyous Union", etc.
