Molson Coors, a global brewing giant based in North America, has launched a new beer, Animee, targeted at women. The beer is said to taste less lighter than its traditional counterparts.

The new less gassy beer will come in three varieties including the standard, clear-filtered beer as well as rose and citrus flavors. The lightly sparkling and less bitter beer will be available in pubs and supermarkets in 275ml bottles from August.

The company said it has spent two and a half years and £1m on research on the beer which will be brewed in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire.

The brewing company's research, which has taken into account the views of 35,000 people, found that 79% of women never, or very rarely, drink beer.

Only 17% of beer in Britain was drunk by women, compared with 25% of beer consumption in the US, a spokesperson of the brewing company said.

Danish brewing company, Carlsberg, is also joining the groove with plans to launch its Copenhagen brand for women in the year 2012.
