Chinese taken to South Africa wines

Local wine exports are finding lucrative markets in African countries such as Tanzania, Nigeria and Kenya.

Although the wine industry had taken a pounding due to the volatile global market, cheaper wines had increased in sales, said Su Birch, the chief executive of Wines of South Africa.

Exports to European markets declined but exports to other African states saw the market grow by 3 percent at the lower end of the premium market.

Another country that had taken to local wine was China.

Speaking on transformation, Birch said there were cases where black farmers had launched their own wine farms but access to the industry required heavy capital investment.
