WINES from the Armidale area could be headed for China if an interest expressed by visitors from Yanji City comes to fruition.

One of the representatives of the Yanji Municipal Government indicated a liking for Armidale wines during the two-day visit last month.

Armidale Dumaresq Councillor Jim Maher said he had spoken to Yanji’s economic development officer.

“He expressed a great interest in Armidale wine,” Cr Maher said.
“He said he would love to see the people of Yanji being able to enjoy Armidale wine.

“I later advised the representative of the local vignerons.”
Cr Maher said the city of Yanji has an annual trade fair, with Yanji being a free trade area close to Korea and Russia.

“I think this is an area we should pursue,” he said.

“Most of the imported wine in Yanji comes from France, but they actually preferred our wine.”

Armidale had a sister city relationship with Yanji some years ago, but it has since lapsed.

Council has been asked to pursue economic, trade, educational and cultural opportunities with the Yanji City Government.
