Worldwide wine day, Beaujolias Nouveau, at Brasserie 28

Cinderella had a famous midnight curfew and there's a popular wine embargo until that same famous time tonight, Thursday, Nov. 17.

The screw cap closure on a bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau cannot be unscrewed until midnight. Seasoned wine sippers know this drill well. Fermented just a few weeks before being released for sale on the third Thursday of November, the wine enjoyed on "Beaujolais Nouveau Day" sees heavy marketing around the world. This year, the event comes to Andover center.

Brasserie 28 at Elm Square is one of the official Beaujolais restaurant destinations outside of Boston, according to owner Matthew Morello.

"It will not be released to the public to drink until 12:01 a.m. (tonight) and is only available for three weeks around the world," Morello said of the wine.

He hopes to have an official Beaujolais wine barrel to tap on his bar. He described the wine as "a very fun drinking table wine that is meant to be enjoyed right away."

"We will be offering the wine for the three weeks for $6 per glass," he said.

This wine is made from Gamay grapes produced in the Beaujolais region, a 34-mile stretch of land in east-central France.

It is the most popular "vin de primeur" (early product wine) and is intended for immediate drinking, not for keeping, he said.

Once compared to eating cookie dough by a wine critic because the wine is simple, fans say sippers should enjoy the wine as early as possible while it is still fresh and fruity.

Morello, who owns Brassiere 28 with his wife, Alison Morello, hopes local sippers decide for themselves. He's also offering a Beaujolais-inspired menu this month to accompany the wine.

With a mention about his Nov. 29 event on the website, bostonchefs.com, there are sure to be some out-of-town sippers.

"It will be a fun time with a fun wine," he said.
