Hunter’s Wines Celebrate Top 100, Blue-Gold At The 2012 Sydney International Wine Compeition

With a history of gold performing wines, Hunter’s Marlborough 2009 Chardonnay adds to the list having been selected in the Top 100 wines at the 2012 Sydney International Wine Competition and also picking up a Blue-Gold award.

The Top 100 wines are selected by a panel of judges chaired by Kym Milne MW of New Zealand from a field of over 2000 wines entered

“We are delighted to receive such a credible award from the Sydney International Wine Competition for our 2009 Chardonnay it is a great standard to meet with a highly respected panel of judges” says Jane Hunter, Managing Director of Hunter’s Wines

“Hunter’s Marlborough 2009 Chardonnay is a rich rounded wine with plenty of white stonefruit characters of peach and nectarine. The fruit is further enhanced by the natural acidity and is balanced by the use of French oak to provide a fresh lingering finish” says winemaker Gary Duke.

The Ernie Hunter Memorial Perpetual Trophy for “Best Lighter Bodied Dry White Table Wine of Competition” went to Saddler’s Creek Classic Hunter Semillon 2005 from the Hunter Valley, New South Wales.

Hunter’s Wines in Marlborough was established by the late Ernie Hunter in 1979. Ernie was tragically killed in a car accident in 1987 which is when Jane Hunter took over the running of the company, continuing Ernie’s legacy of producing quality wines year after year.

The Ernie Hunter Memorial Perpetual Trophy was brought about by the Sydney International Wine Competition and they thought it would be a nice way to remember Ernie as a pioneer of Marlborough wines and as the category is almost inevitably won by a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc – although not this year.

Tastings of all Top 100 wines will be on show at the Awards & Trophies Presentations’ Degustation Banquet in February 2012.
