The severe frost in Canterbury yesterday is being seen as a good thing for local wine producers.
The frost was the worst in the region for June in 25 years.
Waipara Hills Winery spokesman Simon McGeorge says at this stage of the growing season, frosts are needed before new growth starts again in spring.
"The vines are going into dormancy at this time, so they need that dormant stage. The frosts help to shut the vine down completely and allow them to have a bit of a rest - that's when the pruning is done.
Simon McGeorge says frosts are of the most concern during Spring, when the new buds starts forming.
