Being able to compare your wine grapes with those from the best growing regions in the world could be just a zap of a machine away.
VinePAT, from Portugal, is a prototype that uses photonics and near-infrared technology to scan the composition of grapes whilst still in the vineyard.
One of its developers, Professor Antonio Ferraria, spoke about its features at the Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology seminar in Mildura this week.
He says it's about being able to assess grape quality objectively right across the world.
"So to extract the fingerprint that allows us to compare that fingerprint with other fingerprints from other grapes to see the difference between the grape that is made in Australia, with the one that is made is Portugal or in France, to establish like a benchmark."
