Tour a winery on the Monticello Wine Trail, which bills itself as a guide to the birthplace of American wine. Within the past 25 years, 21 farm wineries dedicated to similar standards have grown up within the federally designated Monticello appellation around Charlottesville. It's the largest concentration of wineries in the state.
The Monticello Wine Trail divides those 21 into five more manageable regional groupings. Closest to Richmond are the Eastern Trail, which includes Barboursville, Burnley, Horton and Keswick vineyards; and the Southern Trail, which includes Jefferson, Kluge, First Colony, DelFosse and Sugarleaf vineyards.
