MASON CITY, Iowa - Some will tell you a glass of wine each day is good for your health. It seems folks in Iowa follow that advice. In North Iowa, wine sales are up. Local distributors and restaurant owners tell us they're having no trouble selling.
"We sell bottles and we do by the glass as well too. We go through quite a bit of wine a week," said Jess Harms, a Manager at Chandlers in Mason City.
And with those sales on the rise, a new trend is emerging. Many folks are ditching the imports for something a little closer to home. Iowa made wines are becoming more popular, and buying locally is becoming easier and easier. With new vineyards popping up all around the state, folks don't have to look far to find their Iowa wine."
"Iowa has a lot of vineyards," said Bruce Long, Manager at HyVee Wine and Spirits. "Probably in the last ten years, it's probably more than doubled. I think there's more than 50 vineyards in Iowa now."
In fact, there are nearly 60 active vineyards in the state, and as folks are taking note of these local wineries, more and more of their bottles are showing up on the store shelves.
"People are becoming aware that Iowa does have wineries," said Long.
Iowa has always had a tradition of wine. Before prohibition, Iowa was among the top ten states for wineries in the US. Per capita, Iowa's got one of the highest consumers of wine. And as Iowans enjoy more and more homegrown fruit blends, that rich history will live on.
"They have to buy gas, and so ya know, it's not necessarily something they want, it's something they have to have. This is something they actually want, when you can sell em a product they want, they seem to be a lot happier," said Long.
