For the seventh consecutive year, Vinexpo, the International Wine and Spirits Exhibition has commissioned a detailed study on world wine and spirits consumption, production and international trade with forecasts for the 5-year period up to 2012, from The International 年Wine and Spirit Record (The IWSR).
This study covers 28 wine producing countries and 114 wine and spirits consumer markets.
The database set up by The IWSR in 1971 is the widest, the most accurate and the most detailed source of information on the worldwide market of alcoholic beverages.

In seven years, this study has become a reference for industry professionals. Every year, when comparisons are made between the forecasts and actual consumption, the insignificance of the differences observed highlights the true value of this unique study presented by Vinexpo.

2009 will of course be an atypical year and the repercussions on world wine and spirits consumption are under constant discussion.  However, the trends for the period 2007-2012, when smoothed over the 5-year period, show that the impact of the present crisis on the wine and spirits industry will be limited in overall terms.

PRODUCTION

Between 2003 and 2007, worldwide wine production grew by 1.78% to reach a total of 2.828 billion 9-litre cases.

2007 was exceptional because of the very limited volumes that were produced worldwide. For better consistency therefore, this Vinexpo / The IWSR study takes 2008 as the reference against which the coming five-year trends are analysed. Thus, world production will continue to grow by 3.83% between 2008 and 2012, to reach 3.022 billion cases.

More than half the world’s production continues to be carried out by three countries: France, Italy and Spain.

WORLD WINE CONSUMPTION CONTINUES TO INCREASE

In 2007, more than 31 billion bottles of wine were drunk in the world

Worldwide consumption of grape-based wine (still and sparkling wines) reached 2.621 billion cases in 2007, equivalent to 31.45 billion bottles, an increase of 2.1% compared to 2006.  This acceleration in the growth rate was the sharpest since 2003 and pushed the overall increase in consumption over the preceding five-year period up to 6.16%.

The growth trend in world wine consumption continues up to 2012

The Vinexpo / The IWSR study forecasts uneven growth in 2008 and 2009, but the overall trend to 2012 indicates that world wine consumption will continue to increase by more than 6% over the 5-year period, reaching a total of 2.816 billion cases.

In 10 years therefore, world wine consumption will have increased by 14.07%, or 347.33 million cases, equivalent to a year’s production in the United States, the 4th largest wine producer in the world.
