Italy, having become the leading consumer of still wines in the world, will soon be overtaken by the United States
In 2007, Italian still wine consumption reached 299 million cases, overtaking the historical world leader in wine consumption, France, for the first time.
Looking forward to 2012, the figures confirm previous forecasts: the United States will become the leading consumer of still wines in the world, drinking 313.889 million cases.
The Russian Federation and China strengthen their position among the Top 10 wine consuming countries
The Russian Federation, having downed 69.889 million cases and China with total consumption of 63.667 million cases, were ranked respectively 8th and 9th largest consumer countries of still wine in 2007. Both countries are witnessing sharp growth in their wine consumption.
The two countries will together absorb more than 58% of the growth in volumes drunk throughout the world between 2008 and 2009.
By 2012, Russia, as well as China, will be drinking more wine than Spain!
Per capita wine consumption increases in nearly all countries
The Vinexpo / The IWSR study covers 114 consumer countries and measures average individual consumption amongst populations that are legally old enough to drink.
Only 6 countries (France, Switzerland, Portugal, Austria, Argentina and Spain), which are all producers, witnessed a decrease in their per capita wine consumption between 2003 and 2007.
In the same period in the other 108 countries studied, these rates are growing regularly and reliably. The most promising countries i.e. the United States, UK, Russia and China are still a long way off the per capita consumption levels of the so-called ‘mature’ markets such as France.
WORLD WINE SALES TURNOVER continueS TO GROW
In 2007, worldwide wine sales turnover (expressed with reference to prices paid by consumers) reached US$150.498 billion. This will grow by a further 8.92% between 2008 and 2012 to attain US$166.117 billion.
This turnover growth will be slower over the period from 2008 to 2012 with an average annual forecast of 1.8%, compared to the 2.46% per year achieved over the last 5 years.
However, it should be noted that wine sales turnover continues to increase faster than the volumes consumed over the period: 1.8% per year compared to 1.2%.
The British spend more on wine than the French
In 2007, having spent US$21.839 billion on wine, the Americans have the highest total sales of still wine in the world in value terms. Sales turnover growth on the US market will amount to 13.8% between 2008 and 2012, reaching US$25.527 billion by the end of the period.
Since 2005, the British have spent more on wine than the French.
The Russians, whose spending on still wines almost doubled between 2003 and 2007 (up 84.94%), are expected to spend US$6.45 billion by 2012.
SIGNIFICANT INTERNATIONAL TRADE
One bottle out of four drunk throughout the world is imported
In 2007, 25.37% of all still wine drunk throughout the world was imported, up 16.74% compared to 2003, an average of 3.5% per year.
