Price of Spirits Up in China, Wine Grabbing Market Share

The excise duties of spirits and liqueurs in China has been lifted by 60% to 70% since August 1^st, which means that produers have to pay extra several dozen RMB.

The hike of excise duties pushed up the price of many branded spirits, with Fei Tian Maotai (53% alcohol content) priced at 728 yuan a bottle from 698 yuan a bottle, the price of Wuliangye (52% alcohol content) jumped to 598～628 yuan a bottle from 588 yuan.

Many consumers said that they almost have no ability to consume such premium spirits and liqueurs. However, the price-up of spirits has offered good chances to wine promotion.

According to the insiders, China wine market shares are growing up rapidly with the spread of wine culture.

Figures from China Alcoholic Drinks Industry Aassociation showed that wine production and sales have increased by 23．8％ and 33％ respectively in 2008, which achieved the fastest growth among alcoholic drinks comsumption.
